Human Growth Hormone (HGH) : A Magic Bullet for Oldies
01.25.07 (10:51 am)   [edit]
hgh,

From the beginning of time man has sought a way to extend life, reverse the aging process, and live forever. Up to this point, nothing has proven to be significantly viable for this purpose. However, the greatest advance in man’s ability to “turn back the clock” may now be available to us. The human growth hormone (HGH or Somatotropin) has produced increases in the levels of insulin-like growth hormone 1 (IGF-1). There is a direct connection between the level of this hormone in a human’s body, and their age. As observed by many scientists, if this hormone could be kept at the levels of youth, then would the aging process be slowed down, or even stopped altogether? It is a question that has spawned much controversy within the ranks of physicians, with many leading doctors on both sides of the issue.

The discovery of this new hormone has resulted in many private sellers attempting to make profit from the sale of this product in various forms. HGH is administered via injection by doctors who give growth hormone to their patients. However, many sellers are now offering the hormone in pill, nasal spray, and homeopathic forms. Although the cost of the product in these forms may only be 5% of the cost of injection treatments, the effectiveness of these others forms is questionable. The benefits of HGH are very real, but so are the side effects; It is up to the individual to determine whether the possible benefits outweigh the possible side effects.

Global Warming: Adapt or Prevent?
01.21.07 (12:21 am)   [edit]

NCPA Study Shows Living With globalwarming awareness2007 Is Less Costly, More Beneficial

Trying to stop global warming imposes huge costs and provides very few benefits, according to a study authored by a Bush Administration analyst and released today by the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA).

“Living with global warming costs a fraction of what it would take to stop it,” said Indur Goklany, author of the NCPA study. “The costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed any benefits of doing so for the foreseeable future.”

The NCPA study compared the costs and benefits of adapting to global climate change with strategies that prevent global warming, such as the Kyoto Protocol, and found that problems most often projected to dramatically worsen as a result of global warming are more effectively and economically lowered by adapting to climate change rather than trying to prevent it. For example:

* Meeting Kyoto emission targets would reduce fatalities from malaria by one-half of one percent, but investing an additional $1.5 billion annually for treatment would cut the death toll in half.
* Meeting Kyoto targets would reduce the population at risk for hunger by only 2 percent by 2085, but investing an additional $5 billion to solve agricultural problems in developing countries would reduce hunger by 50 percent beginning today.
* The population at risk for coastal flooding would decline by meeting Kyoto emission standards, but at a cost of $165 billion a year. By contrast, investing an additional $1 billion annually in preventive measures would address the problem just as well, if not more effectively.

Moreover, adapting to climate change would enhance both economic development and human capital and increase the capacity for technological innovation in developing countries.

“By confronting problems head on we can save lives now, especially in developing countries,” Goklany added. “Preventive strategies, like the Kyoto Protocol, will by default condemn thousands to poverty, disease and death.”

UK consumers bought 200,000 Nintendo Wiis over Holiday
01.17.07 (2:21 am)   [edit]
Nintendo sold almost 200,000 Wiis in the UK and more than 500,000 of the next-gen console across the rest of Europe during December 2006, the company has claimed. However, it also admitted it's still having a job shipping out enough of them.

Nintendo launched Wii on 8 December but almost immediately some retailers questioned whether all would-be buyers were going to get their hands on the machine by Holiday.

DSG, owner of PC World, Currys and dixons.co.uk said at the time: "We're expecting four deliveries between now and Holiday and we expect them all to go to pre-orders. If customers haven't already pre-ordered then they've probably missed the boat."

Yesterday, Nintendo Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer admitted the company is still "facing stock shortages", blaming the "high demand" for the console. He said Nintendo was "attempting to deliver both consoles and games to retailers on a daily basis".

Nintendo's sales figures come from UK market monitor Chart Track. The numbers also show that UK consumers bought more than 500,000 Nintendo DS handheld consoles, enough to position it as the UK's top-selling games machine not only during December 2006 but throughout the year, Nintendo said.

In fact, because the CU500 supports the HSDPA protocol for high-speed data transfer, you'll be able to stream TV, video, and more, straight to the CU500.

Take advantage of Cingular's 3G data network with the CU500. See a phone demonstration.
Other key features include support for a Bluetooth stereo headset, an advanced MP3 player with music ID, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Packaged in a stylish black clamshell design, the CU500 phone is the ultimate multimedia device, and the perfect complement to Cingular wireless service.

Design
The CU500 design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with its impressive media and data capabilities while maintaining a stylish and cool exterior. A large 176 x 220 color display with over 65,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 96 full-color display that can display pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. Convenient music player control buttons reside just below the external screen, and the 1.3 megapixel camera lens is housed above this display while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad. A USB data port is provided, as is a microSD/TransFlash memory card slot. Lastly, the internal antenna is safely tucked away, keeping the phone's design compact and portable.

Calling Features
The CU500's internal phone book can hold up to 500 contacts while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports 72-chord polyphonic ringtones, and comes stock with 10 unique ringtones built right into the unit, while more ringtones can be downloaded from Cingular Wireless' MEdia Net service. For times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert, and a built-in full-duplex speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Meanwhile, voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family, and associates as easy as saying their names.

Enjoy Cingular Video, right on your handset.

Technical Details

  • Bright, high-res screen provides large viewable workspace and includes intelligent light sensing technology to automatically optimize screen lighting levels for ideal indoor and outdoor viewing
  • Lightweight handheld with a full QWERTY keyboard
  • Access up to 10 supported business and/or personal email accounts
  • Integrated attachment viewing for popular file formats
  • Bluetooth hands-free headset and car kit support
The latest BlackBerry handheld is better than ever with a thinner profile, a huge screen, a more powerful processor, EDGE data support, and more. The BlackBerry 8700c, an integrated phone, e-mail client (with support for corporate email servers), organizer, and Web browser is the ultimate weapon for mobile professionals.

Take a closer look at the BlackBerry 8700c handheld's functions.
Design
Design-wise, the BlackBerry 8700c is a nice upgrade from BlackBerry devices of the past. Yes, the same handy trackwheel is present on the right side, and yes, you'll still find a full QWERTY keyboard. This handheld is thinner and lighter, however, and the screen is bigger and brighter than ever; the high resolution 320 x 240 LCD display supports over 65,000 colors. Plus, intelligent light-sensing technology automatically optimizes screen lighting levels for indoor and outdoor viewing. The BlackBerry 8700c also features large, dedicated Send and End keys for easier call management.

The popular BlackBerry user interface is here, too, but it's been updated with a new look. Plus, a powerful Intel XScale processor, 64 MB flash memory, and 16 MB SDRAM combine to deliver a dynamic, highly responsive experience when viewing attachments and graphics, browsing the Web, and running applications. There's also a standard 2.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, and a removable lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the handheld.

Calling Features
Many of the calling capabilities folks have come to expect in a wireless phone are present, but the BlackBerry 8700c ups the ante with MP3 ringtones. Plus, the built-in speakerphone offers hands-free calling and convenient conference calls. The handheld's Bluetooth capability (version 2.0) means you can use a wireless headset with the phone for hands-free calling. A vibrating alert, speed dial, and a contacts list/address book (limited only by the unit's 64 MB of internal memory) are also included. The BlackBerry 8700c is a quad-band phone designed for global roaming in 170 countries for voice and 90 countries for data.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The BlackBerry 8700c delivers the legendary BlackBerry e-mail experience. With BlackBerry service plans from Cingular, you can receive e-mails instantaneously from up to 10 e-mail accounts (personal and enterprise). With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).

Because the BlackBerry 8700c is fast, and because it supports EDGE high-speed data networks, users can take advantage enterprise applications that are wirelessly enabled by the BlackBerry platform, such as sales force automation, field service automation, network and systems management, and more.

If your company has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can also take advantage of the power of wireless calendar synchronization. Your calendar events are exchanged wirelessly and automatically so that your desktop calendar and BlackBerry handheld calendar are synchronized. All your Outlook meeting requests, changes, and updates are instantaneously synchronized instantaneously with your desktop. Make meeting requests, invite new attendees and more, all on your BlackBerry 8700c. Users without BlackBerry Enterprise Server support can manually sync with their desktop calendars and contacts via Bluetooth or USB using the included BlackBerry Desktop Software.

Use the BlackBerry 8700's Web browser to access the Internet from the palm of your hand. Browse Web sites, get up-to-date stock quotes, read the latest news, check weather reports, and more. Wireless text messaging and multimedia messaging (MMS) is also supported by the BlackBerry 8700c.

The BlackBerry 8700c ships with a number of tools, including a calculator with a unit converter and a to-do list. The handheld's software is based on the Java platform, meaning Java-compatible games and applications can be added to the handheld.

Vital Statistics
The BlackBerry 8700c weighs 4.7 ounces and measures 4.3 by 2.7 by 0.8 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time and up to 16 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Review: Canon Powershot A640 Digital Camera
01.12.07 (8:32 pm)   [edit]

A640 The versatile A640 caters to the auteur and amateur alike by cramming DSLR features into a point-and-shoot body. Continuous shooting, manual aperture and shutter speed settings, and the option to add wide and telephoto lenses will help satisfy the pros. But it’s also equipped to guide a budding Diane Arbus with a super-intuitive menus and 21 separate shooting modes. Whatever your skill set, this shooter’s 4x optical zoom and 10-megapixel resolution can turn out images so true-to-life, friends might swear you’re the next Ansel Adams. –Erika Stadler

WIRED Flip-out, 2.5-inch LCD can be angled to snap over crowds. Movie mode shoots at 30 frames per second. Included A/V cables for big-screen connectivity. Can shoot underwater with optional case. AA batteries means never having to wait for a charge.

TIRED Not super portable at 4.3 x 2.6 x 2 inches and 12 ounces. Bundled with a rinky-dink and borderline useless 32MB memory card.

Salomon Used Women's Symbio 500 Ski Boots
01.10.07 (3:59 am)   [edit]

This is a used Salomon Symbio 500 Mid Entry boot. This is a great boot for beginner to intermediate skiers looking for a basic boot that is easy to put on and take off. These Mid Entry boots are getting hard to find and alot of beginner skiers love these boots. They open and close in the back. I only took photos of this one boot. They are all in similar condition except as noted in the description below. These boots were used in a Ski Shop Rental program. On the back of the boot there are some numbers printed on the plastic, as seen in the bottom photo. The boots have lots of scuffs and scratches, as you would expect on a used boot. Manufacturers boots fit a little differently. I suggest trying on a similar brand or model at a local shop to get the best idea of fit and size. The mondo point comparison to street shoe size is close but not exact. Remember to use a ski sock made of wool or a wicking fabric. Do not use cotton socks.

Accudart D4010 Bull Bristle Dartboard
01.07.07 (3:51 am)   [edit]

Product Features

  • Includes 6 brass darts 18 grams each
  • Recreation quality bristle dartboard for years of enjoyment and play - "Strong as a Bull"
  • Constructed from self-healing sisal fibers tightly bound for added durablilty
  • Round wire dividers with removable number ring for easy board rotation and extended playing life
  • Ideal use with steel-tip of soft-tip darts. Board size: 18 in. x 1.5 in.
Started out as a good entry-level board, but the metal rings started falling off after a few months. A little work with a hammer fixed the problem, but it's not particularly durable anyway. Probably still a good buy at this price, and I've enjoyed it.
This board is quite fine for at-home use. I'm a rank amateur who finally decided to improve my game by throwing alone at home, the place I practice is outside so I move the board a lot and it's holding up great.

The darts included in this set are okay training darts, the barrels and flights will hold up to lots of practice throws. However, I would recommend getting replacement NYLON shafts right away (a couple bucks for two different-colored 3-shaft sets).

Hey, it sure beats the little desktop velco set I had a few years ago!! ;)
being in a position to run, and play, in tavern tourneys, this board CLEARLY shows "you get what you pay for! Casual use, this is a fine, well priced unit. For any sort of continual use, it just won't hold up. Spend the extra $20.00 or so, buy a Nodor, Winmau, or any other "pro quality board" Save this one for home.

Top 100 Products of 2006

2006 - An Exciting Year for the Tech Industry

The final chapter of 2006 is almost ending, but reflecting back, it has been an exciting year for consumers with new hardware platforms penetrating all segments of electronics.

Computing this year was highly focused on processors as dual-core went mainstream, Intel's Core processor architecture reached new heights and even quad-core was made available to enthusiasts and workstations needing high compute power. And this year more than any other, saw the rise in adoption of Mac products as Apple switched to the Intel platform. This had an interesting ripple effect for the OS and software development space in addition to the raw performance boost. Our appetite for screens has all gone widescreen and so has our storage requirements on all fronts.

In the gaming front, the most riveting entries were none other than the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. Both boasting unique characteristics that are so enticing, we won't be surprised if you even get both of them in addition to your existing Xbox 360! Don't forget that handheld gaming too got an upgrade with the Nintendo DS Lite early this year, further fueling the popularity of the series.

Over on the consumer electronics space, we predicted 2006 would be the year of High Definition (HD), and true enough, the consumer electronics arena was swamped with them! HD televisions, HD camcorders, HD projectors, HD gaming consoles, you name it - all promised to upgrade your personal entertainment experience to the next stratum. Truly, this is definitely the HD year.

Best of 2006 Award

To identify and merit the hardware products and technologies that have made the most impact in their respective categories of this year and set the baseline expectations for the following year, the editors and writers at Hardware Zone have compiled a list of the top hundred products that we believe have made the grade. In no particular order of merit, we present you the products that took top honors with Hardware Zone's Best of 2006 award:-

Intel Core 2 Duo processor
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor is a milestone in microprocessor innovation and there is no doubt that with this line of products in 2006, Intel has AMD whipped in both performance and power consumption. Delivering the new Core microarchitecture across the desktop, mobile and server spaces, Intel plans to retake the lead in the CPU race. Bluntly put, The Intel Core 2 Duo is the world's best dual-core desktop processor. There, we've said it.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor
With only a few months apart after the launch of the Core 2 Duo, Intel unleashes the world's first quad-core desktop CPU into the world based on the same Core microarchitecture and technology as the Core 2 Duo. Whether you look at it as a preemptive strike against AMD's much hyped 4x4 system or just to show that they can, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 CPU increases Intel's lead over its competition even further.

Apple iMac (Core 2 Duo)
The Apple iMacs have always been touted as the best all-in-one computer for Apple fans and wannabes alike. Great looks, great branding, who doesn't love a Mac? But now, the new iMacs armed with Intel Core 2 Duo processors can truly be considered the best all-in-one PC. Yes, they're PCs too, they can run Windows.

ASUS P525 PDA Phone (Wi-Fi)
One of the best new mobile business platforms to hit the market, the ASUS P525 already has quite a following. While it may not be the most fully featured, this Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA phone has well rounded features with push e-mail, a great design, comfortable build and strong battery life. We actually like the keypad/touchscreen hybrid combination too.

PQI U510 Pro (flash drive)
The PQI U510 Pro is the world's thinnest flash drive that is the size of a credit card and is a mere 3mm thick. However, it packs an amazing storage capacity up to 16GB. The Pro version is actually an update to the original sexy U510, now sporting a blazing 170x transfer speed up to 25MB/Sec.

Samsung YP-K5 MP3 player
The Samsung YP-K5 is no ordinary portable MP3 player, it is a venerable boombox in your palm. This diminutive device has an impeccable design and oozes class. Slide out its set of speakers from the back and you can start picking up dropped jaws from the ground. Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W
01.02.07 (5:32 pm)   [edit]

With each successive generation, the power requirement of a typical enthusiast's PC goes up another notch. The emphasis today for processors may be on thermal efficiency but adding more cores to the equation is also equally popular, leading inexorably to an increase in power demands. AMD's quad core 4x4 platform is an extreme example of such a trend and makes power supplies (PSU) of 1KW and greater, a necessity rather than a luxury. Such a scenario is probably more pronounced for the graphics scene, where two GPUs in a system is no longer the cutting edge. We now have quad GPU configurations, thanks to NVIDIA's Quad SLI technology and that means up to four high-end power hungry graphics cards. The usual answer to such escalating power requirements - higher wattage PSUs.

Quad SLI Ready

Boasting a world's first for six dedicated +12V rails providing up to 18A each, this Cooler Master Real Power Pro is really geared towards multi-GPU configurations. Suitable for both NVIDIA's SLI or ATI's CrossFire, it is however clearly targeted at Quad SLI due to the presence of the four individual six-pin PCIe Molex power connectors. With these, you will no longer need to use the Molex power converters that come with your graphics cards.

Having tried Quad SLI, normal SLI and CrossFire setups on a high-end Core 2 Duo system with the Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W PSU, we have to say that so far, we have had no power related issues, like insufficient power to the +12V rails for example. The graphics cards themselves have performed as expected and as they say, no news is good news. The PSU kept a low noise and heat profile (it has an internal 135mm smart fan with variable speed control and a typical decibel rating of less than 16dBA) during prolonged usage. Although our observations are mostly anecdotal and 'unscientific', this PSU does appear to work as advertised.

As part of the new ATX V2.2 standard, the current for the +5Vsb rail, used for your USB devices has been increased in the Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W from 2A to 3.5A. This means that you need not worry about insufficient power for your USB ports and Cooler Master claims that this PSU can support up to 10 - 12 devices. You could even charge your USB devices when the PC is turned off.

Efficient but not Modular

Many branded PSUs now are going the thermal efficiency route and being a high-end flagship model from Cooler Master, the Real Power Pro 850W has all these features, from a 99% Active PFC (power factor correction) rating and an efficiency of more than 85%.

There are also various standard built-in protection measures, like over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature, overloading and short circuit protection, whereby the PSU will stop working in such instances to protect your motherboard and other hardware components against electrical damage.

However, there's another important trend that Cooler Master did not include in this powerful PSU. No modular cabling! This is especially important for powerful and high-end PSUs, where there are usually more than sufficient power connectors. Not all of them may be utilized at the same time and modular cables would have allowed users to hook up only those that they require. For example, you may get this PSU in anticipation of a Quad SLI in the future but for now, you may only need SLI, in which case, modular cables allow you to do away with two extra PCIe power connectors to save space and ease up on cable management.

Always On?

Unlike most good PSUs, this PSU doesn't have a power switch at the rear. This means that you will have to switch off your mains to turn off the PSU properly. This could be an issue when you're fooling around with the motherboard. For example, it is always recommended to turn off the PSU when clearing the CMOS on the motherboard and it is certainly more troublesome if you can't just switch off the PSU with the flick of a button at its back. Users may also forget this step due to the lack of such a switch and that may have negative consequences for your system. Cooler Master reasons that since this a high wattage PSU, the transient inrush current can be excessively large, generating high temperatures that can damage normal power switches. They state that switches that are reliable and safe enough for this use are not easy to come by, thus their reason to do away with a power switch.

Final Thoughts

Cooler Master's 850W monster may not be the first of such powerful PSUs and probably overshadowed by the 1KW behemoths in the market but for most enthusiasts, the name of the game is not always about raw power. Cost is also a factor and 1KW is frankly overkill for virtually most home user PCs. As you can see, 850W is sufficient for a Quad SLI setup and unless you're packing a server cum ultimate gaming machine, we don't know why you need more at this point in time. At about US$219, the Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W will probably be too much even for some enthusiasts but given its capability, it's definitely worth considering at such a price.

Sony Handycam HDR-SR1
01.02.07 (5:29 pm)   [edit]

These days, there is all but the dilemma of choosing the right recording format for anyone contemplating a camcorder. Compounding to the difficulty of having to choose DV tape, DVD or Hard disk recording media is that each media offers its own set of advantages that appear more compelling than the others when considered. At the end of the day however, it just boils down to a decision of either going for picture quality or storage capacity. Ideally, it would be great to stuff a camcorder with the ability to record onto all three media, but realistically, it would be easier and cheaper to just come to a compromise.

With this understanding, Sony and Panasonic have come together to develop a new compression format that could finally put a stop to the longstanding dilemma. The new Sony Handycam HDR-SR1 is a small hard disk-based camcorder and new about it is the new compression technology called AVHCD on which it is built upon. This immediately gives the lightweight camcorder up to 11 hours worth of video recording time in 1080i HD resolution out of the box, a feat that is currently unmatched.

Small Handycam, big resolution

Of the HD camcorders available in the market today, the HDR-SR1 is arguably one of the smallest that offers 1080i recording. In fact, the HDR-SR1 is not any bigger than most ordinary SD camcorder. The same can also be said of its weight even though a 30GB HDD has been fitted within. Housing of the camcorder is mainly made out of plastic, which explains its handy weight. A large 3.5-inch touchscreen allows for quick access to key recording functions. This also swivels so you’ll never lose framing even when recording from awkward angles. You can even choose to power down the LCD screen and use the optical viewfinder to further conserve battery power.

Dolby Digital 5.1 recording comes courtesy of a multi-directional microphone located at the top of the camcorder and there’s even a dedicated microphone jack for clearer voice recording in instances such as interviews. There is no headphone jack though, which means the quality of audio recording cannot be monitored when video recording is underway. Accessories for the HDR-SR1 can be hooked up via a proprietary hot-shoe below the microphone.

HD for me please

The key difference between traditional SD camcorders and HD models such as the HDR-SR1 is recording resolution. Where SD footages of 480p recorded by SD camcorders will appear coarse and pixilated on HD-ready TVs, there is no such issue with the HDR-SR1. What you’ll notice instead is an immediate improvement in video details and overall sharpness. Facial features in particular will be more noticeable.

Final Thoughts

Using the new compression format, the SONY HDR-SR1 is able to record HD video at up to 15Mb/sec MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and the end result is almost as good as DV tape. Not only did the built-in 30GB HDD offer storage capacity for up to 11 hours of video, it also made editing and deleting of unwanted segments much easier than tape-based camcorders.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience with the HDR-SR1 but lament that software support for this new format is still very limited. At point of review, AVHCD was not supported by popular video editing applications such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier. Instead, editing was done using Sony’s Vegas application. We are certain AVHCD will be widely supported in the foreseeable future but that doesn’t mean you have to wait till then to consider getting the HDR-SR1 and start enjoying the convenience of HDD-based HD recording.
