TOP 10 Graphics Card
11.01.06 (1:53 pm)   [edit]

1) ATI Radeon X1900

ATI's X1900 cards, which so far come in XT, XTX, and Crossfire versions as well, are at the top of ATI's current product line for gamers. The performance is very similar to that of GeForce 7 cards. As with earlier ATI cards, the X1900 XT is better than the plain X1900, and the XTX is better still. The X1900 features an impressive 48 shader units and some versions have 512 MB of memory, but they don't come cheap.

2) nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX

The GeForce 7900 is nVidia's premium chipset for gamers, and has several improvements over the 7800. As well as better performance, it's smaller, has fewer transistors, and generates less heat. Subsequently, it should cost less to manufacture cards using the 7900 than the 7800 in the long run, but at the moment they are quite expensive. To be sure, it's a force to be reckoned with and keeps up to the Radeon X1900 XTX on most benchmarks.

3) nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX

With 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex units, and an astonishing 302 million transistors, the GeForce 7800 is one of the most complex graphics processors ever built. By comparison, an Xbox GPU has 60 million transistors. Like GeForce 6 cards, the 7800 supports SLI (Scalable Link Interface), which is nVidia's dual card solution.

4) nVidia GeForce 7600 GT

Aimed at mainstream gamers rather than the high-end of the market, the GeForce 7600 is based on nVidia's new 90-nm G73 graphics core. Although it has half as many pixel shaders as the 7900, it offers performance very close to Radeon X1800 cards on some game benchmarks. Because the new core is more economical to make, 7600 cards are definitely among the best values on the market at the moment.

5) ATI Radeon X1800 XT

The X1000 series from ATI so far includes the X1900, X1800, X1600, and X1300. The X1800 XT is one of their premium offerings with ultra-threaded 3D architecture, improved memory controller efficiency, and Shader Model 3 support. It outperforms the GeForce 7800 GTX on many benchmarks despite having fewer pipelines, and the core hums along at 625 MHz.

6) nVidia GeForce 6800 GT

nVidia's GeForce 6800 series represented the largest leap in game card performance to come along in years. They support DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 3.0 and are available for both AGP and PCI Express. Note that the 6800 Ultra wants two auxiliary power connectors, so you might want to go with the 6800 GT, which only needs one. An excellent card that should get more affordable now that the 7800s are out.

7) ATI Radeon X850 XT

A slightly older chipset from ATI targetted at gamers is the X850, which is available in Pro, XT, and XT Platinum Edition (PE) versions. There is also a Crossfire Edition for those of you interested in running a system with two graphics cards, though this is prohibitively expensive for most purposes. The X850 can be found for AGP and it's a nice choice for a relatively affordable upgrade if Shader Model 3.0 support isn't important to you.

8) nVidia GeForce 6600 GT

Although very similar to the 6800 cards, including DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 3.0 support, nVidia has made some changes to make the 6600 series more affordable. They have fewer pixel pipelines, fewer pixel shader units, and the memory bus has been reduced to 128-bit from 256-bit, but they still offer exceptional game performance. AGP versions of this card are also available, and recent price drops have made the 6600 GT a great value.

9) ATI Radeon X1600 XT

The Radeon X1600 is a mid-range chipset from ATI aimed at those seeking something easier on the wallet than the X1800 and X1900, but better performing than the X1300. It is very comparable in both speed and price to GeForce 6600 technology. Although the X800 is a little faster in some cases, you may want to go with an X1600 because it has Shader Model 3.0 support, which X800 and X850s do not have.

10) ATI Radeon X1300 Pro

Radeon X1300s are designed for gamers on a tight budget. They don't really compare in performance to other cards on this list, but they do support Shader Model 3.0 and they run most games adequately at lower settings. I recommend the Pro model because it's a little faster than the vanilla X1300. With some shopping around and maybe a rebate, you should be able to find an X1300 Pro card for under $100.

Is a voting machine a good-thing
11.01.06 (1:13 pm)   [edit]
Technology is a two edged sword. Technology can grant enormous power to the wielder. But dependence on technology, and the unintended consequences I talked about, can be an achilles heel. A voting machine can be a good thing and a bad thing. Let’s not kid ourselves though. Technology is already involved in the voting process. It’s in the optical scanners and the card readers. But what is causing a ruckus is that we are moving to a completely computerized voting process. And that has already caused some major problems.

“In Fairfax County, VA, in 2003, a programming error in the electronic voting machines caused them to mysteriously subtract 100 votes from one particular candidates’ totals.

In San Bernardino County, CA in 2001, a programming error caused the computer to look for votes in the wrong portion of the ballot in 33 local elections, which meant that no votes registered on those ballots for that election. A recount was done by hand.

In Volusia County, FL in 2000, an electronic voting machine gave Al Gore a final vote count of negative 16,022 votes.

The 2003 election in Boone County, IA, had the electronic vote-counting equipment showing that more than 140,000 votes had been cast in the Nov. 4 municipal elections. The county has only 50,000 residents and less than half of them were eligible to vote in this election.”

Quote by Bruce Schneier - ps, if you haven’t read Bruce’s blog, you really should! As Schneier states, computer bugs, complexity, etc. can have serious errors. And those errors can occur with a single candidate. That means that the problem or error won’t effect everyone - and that’s the sort of problem you don’t want. But the past issues don’t end there.

The Scoop wrote up an excellent expose from author Bev Harris, in the wake of the last election. Here is a brief excerpt from Rob, a technician who worked on the Diebold machines. I think this illustrates the gravity of the situation:

‘Harris: “So what is your opinion about the certification testing?”

Behler: “No, it’s not just that. NOBODY even tested it! When I found that out — I mean you can’t not test a fix — I worked for a billing company, and if I’d put a fix on that wasn’t tested I’d have gotten FIRED! You have to make sure whatever fix you did didn’t break something else. But they didn’t even TEST the fixes before they told us to install them.

“Look, we’re doing this and 50-60 percent of the machines are still freezing up! Turn it on, get one result. Turn it off and next time you turn it on you get a different result. Six times, you’d get six different results.”‘

That’s not very comforting. And I was shocked to learn that they had actually dialed out to remote servers for software updates. That makes me really nervous. I would have thought that segregating these machines from a broader network would be a primary concern.

So the machines in and of themselves have been riddled with bugs and accuracy issues. But that’s not the most unnerving issue with voting machines. And it’s not, in my humble opinion, the outside hacker that we need to be gravely concerned about. I think the most troubling aspect of the whole mess is the inside game. What keeps politicians from developing relationships with these computer voting companies? That is very hard to track. In fact, the Hill published a stunning article regarding Senator Hagel of Nebraska (R). Senator Hagel owned $1-$5 M in financial holdings in the McCarthy Group, “a private merchant banking company.” This is what the Hill found:

“ES&S is a subsidiary of McCarthy Group Inc., which is jointly held by the holding firm and the Omaha World-Herald Co., which publishes the state’s largest newspaper. The voting machine company makes sophisticated optical scan and touch-screen vote-counting devices that many states have begun buying in recent years.

An official at Nebraska’s Election Administration estimated that ES&S machines tallied 85 percent of the votes cast in Hagel’s 2002 and 1996 election races.

In 1996, ES&S operated as American Information Systems Inc. (AIS). The company became ES&S after merging with Business Records Corp. in 1997.”

Hagel didn’t report the underlying holding in the McCarthy Group. And this comes off as a blatant cover up. And how is this for understatement?

“In a disclosure form filed in 1996, covering the previous year, Hagel, then a Senate candidate, did not report that he was still chairman of AIS for the first 10 weeks of the year, as he was required to do.

Hagel’s ties to ES&S go beyond his financial stake. He served as its chairman when it was named AIS from the early ‘90s until March of 1995. He also was an investor in AIS Investors Inc. until the beginning of 1995, McCarthy said.

Hagel also served as president of McCarthy & Co, the financial advisory group, from July of 1992 until the beginning of 1996.

Campaign finance reports show that McCarthy has served as treasurer for Hagel for Nebraska and later Hagel for Senate from 1999 until as recently as December of 2002.

McCarthy’s son, Kevin, works in Hagel’s press shop.

Hagel’s unrecorded stake in the voting systems company poses an apparent conflict of interest on election reform issues.”

This is the type of thing that scares me the most. It is the deal made in the back room, with large amounts of money. In any effect, the debate is going to continue. Follow this link to read a quick list of pros and cons of voting machines. You may also wish to check out BlackBoxVoting.org. They are “the official consumer protection group for elections, funded by citizen donations.”

Do you really need that latest gadget?
11.01.06 (1:11 pm)   [edit]
Some gadgets improve the quality of your life. Others sit in your attic.

How much is too much? When it comes to technological devices, I find myself asking that question more and more.

Our society is filled with iPods, Treos, Bluetooth devices, cellphones, laptops, satellite radios, global tracking devices, TiVos, flat-screen TVs, universal remotes, Game Boys, PlayStations, Xboxes, Sidekicks - the list goes on and on.

Now, I am no Luddite. I've always been an early adopter of technology. I had a cellphone in my car in 1990. I paid almost $500 for a 14.4-baud modem in 1993 and marveled at how much faster it made my Internet connection. I created the first newspaper site on the Internet in Canada in 1994. I have two Apple Newtons in my attic, in almost pristine condition. In 2001, I even purchased an "Audrey," a machine designed to be the first "kitchen computer" or Web-appliance. These days, it's keeping the Newtons company upstairs.

It's not that I don't appreciate the occasional new device. But as time passes, I find my appetite for new technology fading. Increasingly, if it doesn't serve a useful purpose in my life, I'm not interested.

For instance, while I've used an iPod, I don't own one. When I want to listen to music, I play a CD. (I even have a machine that plays - gasp - my old records made of vinyl.) Or I listen to this thing called the radio, which seems to offer a wide variety of all kinds of music.

But for me, the device that falls into the "too much" category is the BlackBerry, "a wireless e-mail solution for mobile professionals." About 5.5 million of these machines have been sold, according to Research in Motion, the BlackBerry's manufacturer. Many of my friends now have one - and swear their world would fall apart if they could no longer use one.

A Sprint television ad for BlackBerry actually makes fun of how this small machine can take over your life. One man, talking about his BlackBerry's new GPS tracking feature, says he would be lost without it. A friend takes the device from him to look at it, and suddenly the owner acts lost, not recognizing his surroundings. He is not restored to normal until his BlackBerry is returned.

A good friend of mine, Sue Gardner, also a journalist, uses a BlackBerry like I use a fork. The machine has become an indispensable part of her life, made necessary by a job that requires her to be in constant contact with her office. As head of the CBC's news website in Canada (CBC.ca), she no longer views her BlackBerry as simply a business tool, it has become - in some Star Trek Borg-like fashion - an extension of her arm. Sue has been assimilated. And she knows it.

"I keep it on a very short leash," she told me over the telephone from Toronto last weekend. "I bought it in 2000, and since 2000, it has never been more than four feet from me."

She even knows that it may be more of a security blanket than a truly necessary tool.

"For instance, when Saddam Hussein was captured very early in the morning on a weekend, I was home in bed," she said. "There was nothing I could do about that - there were already people in place to take care of it. The work gets done, I don't really need to know. So there really is no rational explanation for my BlackBerry. But I love it."

Good-natured kidding aside, I believe the dividing line between just enough and too much ultimately has to be a utilitarian one.

Sure, sometimes you can buy something because it's cool or fun. Or like my friend Sue, because it offers some intangible quality that you relish. But even people who purchase iPods do so because it makes the act of listening to music easier.

For me, my cellphone is my Borg device because it keeps me connected to my family, my kids' school, my wife's office, etc. But I'm not interested in owning a Bluetooth earpiece for the simple luxury of hands-free talking. I just don't need it.

And that measuring stick should apply to every technology purchase you make: Do you really need this?

For example, if you are buying a new computer this season, think about what you really need it to do. Far too many people who are interested only in e-mail and Internet surfing buy a machine that could power the space program. Simply put, they spend way too much money.

Be smart. Find out how a new gadget will improve your life before buying it. Or just let it be. Certainly by letting technology's advance pass you by, you won't worry about having too much of it.

You've probably seen the wildly popular Motorola RAZR V3 in someone's hand before. With the quad-band GSM RAZR V3i, Motorola has made it even better. The sexy design is still here, as is the all-metal construction. This time, though, the phone boasts an updated and streamlined design, enhanced video capture and playback capabilities, a 1.23 megapixel camera, and a hot-swappable MicroSD memory card slot.

Put a little luxury in your pocket with the RAZR V3i Dolce & Gabbana.
And now when you thought it couldn't get any better, Dolce & Gabbana and Motorola have partnered up to release the latest version of the v3i: The RAZR V3i D & G. The phone unites the elegance and unique design of Motorola V3i with the individual style and attitude of D & G. The V3i DG features the famous RAZR slim shape, includes an anodized aluminum gold finish that reflects your impeccable taste, and its music player runs on Apple's popular iTunes software.

Design
At .55 inches thick, the RAZR V3i is virtually the same thickness as the original RAZR. And like the original RAZR, the phone's design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, fully-anodized aluminum construction. A large 176 x 220 color display with 262,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display caller ID pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The 1.23 megapixel camera lens is housed above this display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control.

Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A mini-USB port is provided, which, while useful for fast data transfer, can also be used with compatible USB stereo headsets. Note that the phone does not have a standard 2.5mm headset jack.

And don't forget, Dolce & Gabbana and Motorola wouldn't think of offering a phone without making available a special edition gold plated Motorola Bluetooth H700 Headset. Coordinate your phone and Bluetooth headset in style.

Calling Features
The RAZR V3i's internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. The phone also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. For times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. Speaker-independent technology allows any speaker to dial numbers with the voice dialing system. And because the RAZR V3i is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

A 1.3 megapixel camera at the top of the phone's cover bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The RAZR V3i is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in Web browser for mobile Web downloads and browsing via your carrier's GPRS-based data service. If you need email on the go, the V3i comes with an email client that supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP email standards. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RAZR V3i including a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone can also be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
The V3i's 1.3 megapixel camera bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras. The digital zoom-enabled camera is also designed to capture video. You can even print your shots on a Bluetooth-enabled printer. Embedded animated screensavers and full screen wallpapers are built-in so you can set up the RAZR V3i to suit your tastes. The phone supports games, as well as gaming connectivity via Bluetooth.

Into bringing your music with you everywhere you go? With the V3i D & C's hot-swappable MicroSD memory card slot, you can stylishly take all of your favorite music with you. Your music library is now limited only by how much memory you bring along. And don't forget, the V3i DC's music player runs on one of the most popular music software system's of all time-- Apple's iTunes!

The Motorola RAZR V3i Dolce & Gabbana weighs 3.53 ounces and measures 3.86 x 2.09 x .55 inches. Greenpeace booted from MacExpo
10.28.06 (8:25 am)   [edit]
Environmentalist organization Greenpeace was kicked out of the MacExpo being held in London this week due to complaints by Expo-goers about the organization's behavior on the floor. Greenpeace had purchased a 3-day booth at the MacExpo to showcase their "Green My Apple" campaign, which was meant to raise awareness about potentially toxic chemicals used in Apple products. They were also handing out organic apples, flyers, and signing up Expo-goers to challenge Apple to "go green."

Greenpeace has been hounding Apple for the last few months, first when its environmental ranking report came out in August, then in September when the "Green My Apple" campaign launched, and now with the booth at the MacExpo. The complaints about Greenpeace came from nine individuals who were attending the show in London. Bob Denton of the XPO Group, organizers of the MacExpo, told setteB.IT that he had received a complaint that Greenpeace members had photographed an infant with an apple and a flyer against the mother's wishes. Other reports claim that members from Greenpeace even replaced the promotional materials from other exhibitors with their own. Greenpeace members were then asked several times times to restrict their activities to their booth, but after continuing to force apples and flyers upon show-goers, they were finally asked to leave.

After being removed from the show on Thursday, angry Greenpeace members vowed to be back. True to their word, Greenpeace showed up today at Underground Station Kensington Olympia near the MacExpo to hand out more apples and flyers, but reportedly caused a disturbance once again and were removed from the station by the London Transport Police.

Did Greenpeace have a place at the MacExpo? One Greenpeace campaigner, Iza Kruszewska, complained that being kicked out of the expo was "totally over the top," and that "Apple refuses to address our criticisms on their products, both for the recycling and for the use of harmful chemicals. Instead of hiding their head in the sand, Apple should be a world leader in the greening of the electronics industry, not lagging behind." However, reports say that the actions taken against Greenpeace by XPO Group were all due to personal complaints and that there was no protest against Greenpeace from any of the companies involved in the Expo, including Apple. Apple made no official statement about Greenpeace's removal, however they apparently advised XPO Group to use this statement: "Greenpeace violated MacExpo exhibitor agreement by booking a stand at the show with a false name. After several complaints MacExpo asked Greenpeace to leave the show."

Cocaine Energy Drink Like Red Bull or Rockstar Energy Drinks x10!!
10.22.06 (1:29 am)   [edit]

cocaine energy drink

Cocaine Energy Drink is the hottest new product to hit the market. It’s creating HUGE buzz in the news and is extremely controversial. Some people don’t like the name, while others think the Cocaine Energy Drink comes too close to the feeling of being on cocaine. The drink has over 3 times the caffeine that any energy drink on the market currently contains., and a slight throat numbing effect. This Cocaine Energy drink is sold out every where and extremely difficult to find. While some legislators and activists are trying to stop the Cocaine Drink from hitting store shelves others are scrambling to find it and try it. Some people describe it as a Fruity atomic fireball others like, some don’t. But with such a huge amount of caffeine the energy rush is definitely something to be careful with!

Defining Next Gen Football Gaming
10.14.06 (1:16 pm)   [edit]

It means that FIFA is a # 1 priority for EA and that we wanted to answer your most important requests for Next Gen offerings:
- responsiveness and a great feel
- Athletic motion and a realistic simulation
- Football Intelligence and variability

This is why we decided 2 years ago to rebuild a completely new football game engine. It is our biggest investment in the football business to date.

Developing this new generation technology took us more than 100,000 hours: the equivalent of 66.700 football matches played back to back. We firmly believe that it will set new standards and it already opens many doors for next gen gameplay.

This new technology powers FIFA 07 on Xbox 360 and is a combination of:
• a revolutionary Animation Engine;
• a new physics engine that manages player biomechanics and ball behavior;
• a new data driven AI system that reproduces human decision-making.

This is the start of a bright future. The new FIFA engine will do for Gameplay what Fight Night did for Graphics on Next Gen. Our goal on Next Gen is to blur the line between reality and the virtual world. So welcome to our world!

The first element was developing an animation tool called ANT which allows us to create player movement and behavior that you have never experienced before:

Authentic motion and athletic performance are possible due to the real time calculation of realistic human biomechanics:
• Momentum: the player movement takes into account the physics of the human body. You will notice the leaning of the body as he is accelerating or turning
• Foot planting shows the real time calculation of the foot positioning and of the body movements thanks to the technology Inverse Kinematics.

We also developed a better “FEEL” mainly driven by a great responsiveness:
• The next gen player is more responsive as he can interrupt his animations at any time and then blend into the next animation.

It creates unprecedented realism for how the players move around the pitch, how they behave and how they respond to game situations and other players. It also helped us eliminate things like foot sliding and unrealistic stops and turns. Creating this level of authentic athletic performance is only possible with the power of next gen hardware and is really a first for sports games. The key is that it really supports the gameplay as it gives to the gamer in real time the exact information to react and make the right decision. It gives context to the action.

Our philosophy is that your first experience with FIFA 07 on Xbox 360 is as important as the 200th match. During your first experience, you will discover that:

• The motion reacts to the control inputs with accurate human biomechanics
• You will also quickly notice that the ball is alive! It is no longer attached to the foot like an elastic. The reason is that with this new engine, the ball is not baked into the animation any more.
• For years, you have asked us to focus on the realism of the ball. You will see that the ball is driven by realistic physics: it has curve, spin, etc ...

As a result, you will need to relearn how to play FIFA, to discover the new and advanced controls. As you play more games, you will discover the depth of the new engine:
- Strategy, tactics, intelligence!

In fact, the power of the Xbox 360 enables us to apply all the key algorithms of the engine to all 22 players in real time. One of these algorithms is our new AI system.

Our new AI architecture includes a decision layer that takes into account what happened before and what could happen after the action. This gives us accurate context and reactions at the right time. The 22 players now have a brain. So as a result: the game is non-deterministic and each situation is unique.

We also focused on player individuality: Each player now has 35 unique attributes and traits amongst 45 different behaviors. A trait is a tendency. IE: shooting from far.
We will talk more on this in the next blog entry!

As you play, you will also witness how beautiful the game looks: I wanted to mention that FIFA has always been the beautiful and authentic game. Once again, the visuals and the presentation talk to football fans and are stunning. We are passionate about this sport and want to show it!

Another important goal was to add depth into the game. So we developed game modes to:
- challenge you: Challenge Mode
- immerse you in the real world of football: Manager Mode
- enable you to have fun in multiplayer: Lounge Mode

More blogs will present you these features in greater depth.

Finally, we will present you another key innovation for FIFA 07: Our Online offering is truly unique. We are football fans first and we all support a club. We live and breathe for our club. Well, we are now connected to it. You will discover this in the Online Blog. So FIFA 07 on Xbox 360 becomes the singular destination for a football fan!

To recap:
FIFA 07 Next Gen is powered by a new football engine and features:
- Athletic performance and responsiveness
- Realistic physics based intelligent simulation
- Authenticity and deep modes
- An unequalled online experience for football fans

These are very exciting times and this is just the beginning; we built the foundations for a very powerful engine. Check back weekly to read more detailed information from our team on the innovations you can expect to see in FIFA 07 on Xbox 360.

I hope you enjoy our insights - we look forward to reading your comments!

Libya to Buy 1.2 Million $100 Laptops
10.12.06 (7:09 am)   [edit]

Most people would likely not think of Libya as the beacon of technology in education, but if the government has its way it could soon be. The New York Times said Wednesday that the nation is planning to purchase 1.2 million "$100 laptops" for its school-age children.

The country's government signed a $250 million deal with the One Laptop Per Child project, which would cover the cost of the units plus the necessary servers, training and satellite Internet connections. The rollout should be completed by June 2008.

If the project is successful, the country could become the first to offer the simple laptops to its students. Other agreements are in the works with countries like Argentina, Brazil, Thailand and others; however, nothing has been finalized in those countries as of yet.

Libya's move is only the latest of several aimed at opening up the country after years of isolation, and follows others that are meant to soften the country's public image. Leader Moammar Gadhafi publicly denounced terrorism in 2003 and opened up the country in hopes of bolstering Libya's struggling economy.

Production of the laptops is not expected to begin until the middle of next year, although test units would be shipped next month to participants. While the Linux-powered laptop will initially cost $150, it is expected to eventually drop in price to $100 or perhaps even lower.

Nokia plans WiMAX cell phones
10.12.06 (6:57 am)   [edit]
The tether tying cell phones to cellular networks will be further loosened in 2008, when Nokia introduces its first WiMAX-capable cellular phones. Nokia isn't releasing too many details on the handsets other than the fact that they will work with the mobile version of the WiMAX standard.

Sponsored Links: Project4Hire.com is the place to find Freelance Programmers, Web Designers, Graphic Artists, IT Professionals, Translators, Writers, Consultants & other Freelance Professionals. If you have a project you need help on, you’ve come to the right place. Find qualified freelancers willing to do the job within your budget! Post your project for free and receive bids.

Officially known by its 802.16 monikers, WiMAX comes in two flavors: fixed location and mobile. 802.16REVd handles the fixed-position WiMAX, which promises wide-area wireless connectivity with DSL-type speeds. 802.16e-2005 is the mobile version and promises similar speeds for applications and devices needing something more than a fixed-point connection.

WiMAX is slowly spreading its wireless tendrils, with some installations in Europe and a handful under way in North America. Recently, Samsung, Intel, Motorola, and Sprint Nextel joined forces to build a national WiMAX network using Sprint Nextel's spectrum and cell towers with hopes of a 2008 launch.

In addition to announcing the handsets, Nokia said it will begin selling the Flexi WiMAX Base Station in 2007. Targeted at WiMAX network operators, the Base Station uses a small and modular design which Nokia says can lessen the costs of deploying WiMAX networks. "As the world is going wireless, we believe the Nokia Flexi WiMAX Base Station offers broadband operators an easy and trusted way to offer wireless Internet connectivity to their customers anytime, anywhere," said Nokia SVP of Radio Networks Ari Lehtoranta. "Nokia is a strong believer in having a multiradio strategy that gives operators a future-proof solution and the flexibility to choose different technologies as they evolve."

Nokia currently offers a couple of cell phone models that can also use 802.11b/g for VoIP calls. It has also begun a pilot program for what it calls Unlicensed Mobile Access, where calls are routed seamlessly between WiFi and traditional cell networks, depending on which is the best option. With a handset that can work with WiFi, mobile WiMAX, and cell networks, mobile phone users would have even more options for how to place calls, perhaps to the dismay of the cellular providers.

Nokia says its UMA phones are no threat to cellular networks, but as WiMAX networks become more commonplace, it's not out of the question that many users will be able to dodge the cell networks altogether in favor of VoIP calls made with WiFi- and WiMAX-capable handsets. With Intel today introducing its first system-on-a-chip solution capable of supporting both fixed and mobile networks, we're going to begin seeing hardware that offers more options in terms of wireless connectivity than ever before. Now if only the WiMAX deployments would speed up

Samsung SCH-B600 Has a 10-Megapixel Camera Inside
10.11.06 (6:50 am)   [edit]

Here's what Samsung is calling "the world's first super camera phone," the Samsung SCH-B600. That's a 10-megapixel digital camera in there, and the lens is long enough to let it zoom 3x optically. A neat trick: the phone is 6mm thinner and 10g lighter than Samsung's 7-megapixel V770 camera phone it introduced last year. It works just like a regular digital camera, too, with autofocus, a 2.2-inch 240x320 LCD display and video at 320x240 and 30fps. The bad news is that it will initially only be available in Korea for $900.

Well, it's about time somebody rolled out a decent digital camera inside a cell phone, and even though this one will only be only available in Korea for an exorbitant price, it's just the next shot in the ongoing war to place real cameras inside cellphones, and not just a bunch of unusable blurry bullshit. But that megapixel number doesn't tell the whole story. Wonder if the lens is any good, or those sensors gathering the light...? – Charlie White

Check out the detailed photos and official Samsung press release, after the jump.

Samsung's Official Press Release:

SEOUL, KOREA, Oct 10th, 2006: Samsung reinforces its technology leadership by launching the world's first 10 megapixel mobile phone (model: SCH-B600) in Korean market.

Samsung reached another milestone in camera phones by launching 10 megapixel camera phone, which was unveiled at CeBIT in March this year. Samsung has been the first to introduce mobile phone with embedded camera in 2000. Samsung has also launched the world's first 5 megapixel camera phone in October 2004 ; the world's first 7 megapixel camera phone in July 2005.

Samsung's 10 megapixel camera phone (SCH-B600) is 6mm thinner and 10g lighter than the 7 megapixel camera phone (SCH-V770) and sets itself apart from its previous megapixel camera phones by combining mobile TV capability in Satellite standard.

The B600 offers the same level of picture-taking sophistication that a 10 megapixel digital camera offers. The camera function includes 3x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom. It also has auto focus and a flash unit that performs optimally for 10 megapixel photographs.

Also, the B600 comes fitted with a LED autofocus feature which assists users to capture clear, crisp photos even in dark settings. Located next to the lens, the LED autofocus automatically determines the distance and utilizes the appropriate focus setting for optimal photo shooting.

The B600 also supports white balance, manual focus, continuous picture-taking, and interval picture-taking functions.

It also supports Bluetooth which enables users to send pictures wirelessly to other mobile phones, printers or to Bluetooth headsets.

The high color Reproduction TFT-LCD produces the highest possible display for its size. The photo-fine chromic LCD can reproduce 16 million colors, virtually any color found in nature, earning it the "True Color" appellation. Moving pictures can be recorded in QVGA resolution at 15-30 frames per second. Users can watch live TV in crisp picture through Satellite DMB function.

It also supports external memory (MMCmicro) in addition to its internal memory. The mobile phone supports a TV-out function where users can connect their phones to view still or motion pictures.
The B600 comes with a design reminiscent of a real digital camera. The front is designed as a bar-type mobile phone, while the back side is used as the digital camera.

Other advanced functions in the B600 include an MP3 player, business card reader, and 128 polyphonic sounds.

The price of Samsung B600 is around 900,000 won (about $ 900) in Korea."

YouTube: From gags to riches
10.11.06 (4:54 am)   [edit]

Twenty months ago, a pair of twentysomething buddies founded a company above a California pizzeria that let people post their favourite video clips, ranging from stupid pet tricks to rotund Plasticine hippos that sing.

It was a wildly improbable business model, laced with the threat of copyright infringement lawsuits and stiff competition. But it worked.

YouTube Inc. agreed Monday to be swallowed by Google Inc. for $1.65-billion (U.S.), a deal that may mark one of the fastest Internet growth stories since the tech heyday of the 1990s.

“It's nothing short of phenomenal,” said Rick Broadhead, a Toronto-based technology author and analyst who believes video is the next big thing on the Internet. “They really did come out of nowhere and, very quickly, became a household name.”

People now view the site's videos — which range from hokey homemade clips to TV show segments — more than 100 million times a day. Meanwhile, the number of unique visitors — roughly equivalent to the number of individuals with unique Web addresses who visit the site — has exploded to 72 million in August from 2.8 million a year earlier, according to comScore Networks. As a result, YouTube has become one of the most visited websites in the world.

Even more astonishing is that its popularity arose from plain old word of mouth.

“I can't recall a brand that advanced as quickly as YouTube has, into our consciousness and our awareness, without much marketing,” Mr. Broadhead said.

“Think about a brand like McDonald's or Coca-Cola, it took them years. YouTube has become part of our vocabulary in less than two years.”

Even eight-year-old Google, the world's largest search engine, seems a dinosaur by comparison.

Google has been trying to build its video business, but hasn't met with nearly the success of its smaller rival.

In announcing its largest-ever acquisition Monday, Google said YouTube will still operate independently “to preserve its successful brand and passionate community.” To that end, YouTube will keep its headquarters and all of its 67 employees.

All this fuss from a firm that subsisted on $11.5-million in venture capital in an austere office above a San Mateo, Calif., pizzeria until recently moving to more spacious quarters in nearby San Bruno.

The pair reportedly met when they worked at PayPal, the on-line payment site that has since been acquired by eBay. Today, Chad Hurley, a 29-year-old, long-haired father of two, is YouTube's chief executive. Steven Chen, a 27-year-old native of Taiwan who sports gold earrings, is the chief technology officer.

While most videos they post are homemade, the site also features volumes of copyrighted material — a problem that has caused some critics to predict the startup eventually would be sued into oblivion, much like the once-popular music-sharing site Napster.

But Mr. Hurley and Mr. Chen have spent months cozying up with major media executives in an effort to persuade them that YouTube could help them make more money by helping them connect with the growing number of people who spend most of their free time on the Internet.

That conciliatory approach has recently yielded several licensing and promotional agreements that have eased some of the copyright concerns while providing the company with some financial breathing room until it becomes profitable.

A growing number of movie and music companies figure YouTube's mammoth popularity may eventually work to their advantage.

As its negotiations with Google neared fruition, YouTube announced earlier Monday new partnerships with Universal Music Group, CBS Corp. and Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Those alliances followed a similar arrangement announced last month with Warner Music Group Inc.

The truce with Universal represented a particularly significant breakthrough because the world's largest record company had threatened to sue YouTube for copyright infringement less than a month ago.

Monday's announced union makes strategic sense for both Google and YouTube, Mr. Broadhead said.

“It's like macaroni and cheese,” he said. “It's a marriage made in heaven: you've got the advertising expertise that Google has and the video expertise that YouTube has.”

To that end, Monday's deal is a blow to rivals such as Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. who also want in on the game, he added.

Google awards contest open to students
10.10.06 (5:15 pm)   [edit]

Students seeking national recognition, an extra something to put in their resumes or just a place to write down their creative thoughts now have the opportunity they've been waiting for.

They can just go go Google Gadget.

Currently, Google is holding an award program for all undergraduate and graduate university students across the nation to create their own personal 'gadget' that can be submitted in a variety of categories.

Google Gadgets are applications that personalize Google homepages, Google Desktop and Google Page Creator, Adam Sah, architect for Google Gadgets, said.

"Basically a Google Gadget is a mini version of a Web page," Sah said. "It has your own URL and you can submit the gadget in a normal directory. There isn't much to it."

After a popularity explosion of Google Gadgets last December, this award program was simply an extension of what Google was already doing, Sah said.

"These gadgets are a new way to express yourself on the Internet, and this is a great way of getting people aware of this," he said.

Each gadget is submitted into a different category of most useful gadget, most intelligent gadget, gadget most likely to help you get a date, most addictive gadget, prettiest gadget and best overall gadget. The winner of each category will receive a trophy and will be promoted on each Google personalized homepage.

Nicole Peterson (sophomore-mechanical engineering) said she would be interested in entering the awards program.

"I am an engineering major, and this would be good to have on a resume," Peterson said. "It shows initiative and creativity on my part."

Each student can submit as many gadgets as they desire to any of the categories. After the gadgets are submitted, the creator is allowed to go back and change anything he or she does not like about their design.

The award program is not limited to any specific major because gadgets are so easy to create and understand, Sah said.

"This is so we can encourage all people to come up with interesting ideas that we couldn't come up with on our own," Sah said. "Young people have really great ideas that the pros don't have."

The information sciences and technology (IST) department offers classes to aid students in making a gadget, Gerry Santoro, assistant IST professor, said.

"We offer classes that provide the background in programming design and skill concepts for this contest," Santoro said. "But it's really up to the student to apply these tools to creating a Google Gadget."

Students are also encouraged to enter the awards program for the chance to enhance their resumes.

IST Internship Coordinator Madhavi Kari said she believes the awards program is very beneficial to students.

"I think any type of experience, especially for technical students, to have the opportunity to get involved with Google is great," Kari said. "It will serve as an ice breaker and conversation starter for students in interviews and be a great thing to put on their resume."

Although some students think the awards program is beneficial for some people, they are not interested in applying.

Tommy Cropper (freshman-political science) said, "I think there are a lot of really computer-savvy students, and it would be a good opportunity for them."

Matt Opremcak (junior-IST) said even though he is an IST major, he will not enter the awards program.

"I just don't have enough time to sit down and do that," he said.

Santoro said he believes the awards program to be a good opportunity for all students.

"That kind of positive publicity is a great thing that can really help your career and can open doors that you may have never anticipated," he said.

Beware iPod thieves, gadget fans warned
10.10.06 (8:07 am)   [edit]

Gadget fans are being warned to take more precautions when using their MP3 players and mobile phones in public by a new government advertising campaign.

The common sense message of the 'keep it safe' campaign warns people not to leave their mobile at the bar when they play pool and keep MP3 players concealed on the Tube.

This type of crime often happens in or around public transport so the posters will mainly appear on the London Underground and outside train and bus stations, where people are likely to use their mobiles and MP3 players. The campaign will also feature on petrol-pump nozzles and there will be television and radio adverts across England and Wales.

Police and security minister Vernon Coaker said, while the risk of becoming a victim of crime is at its lowest for 25 years, there are now more mobile phones than people in the UK so there are more opportunities for thieves.

The campaign will focus on 27 robbery "hotspots" identified by the British Crime Survey, including the London areas of Greenwich, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets. Out of the 27 hotspots, 15 are within the Greater London area, although Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester are also singled out as having high robbery rates.

The campaign has run through the autumn and winter of the last three years, and is launched to coincide with the start of the new university year.

Students laden with iPods, laptops and other fancy gadgets are vulnerable and thus one of the key audiences this campaign is targeted at, a Home Office spokesman said.

Hardwood Laminate Prefinished Engineered Flooring

Hardwood Flooring Wood Floors Laminate Flooring Engineered Prefinished Discount

The sunny, care-free days of summer have drifted away and now it is time to get ready for the colorful falling leaves and crisp, cool, windy nights that follow the autumn season. With the season transition and the holidays soon approaching, it is a great time to bring nature’s warm colors, tones and hues from the outside into your home, floor decorating experts say.

Hardwoodbrokers.com, a leading manufacturer of high-end, hardwood flooring, announces its Exotic Series of hardwood flooring. This new line brings striking species of hardwood from areas of South America and Africa, including Brazilian Cherry/Jatoba, Santos/Cabreuva, Sapele and Tigerwood. These four species of wood are rich in tone and provide a warmer, cozier ambiance to any setting.

The beauty of laminate flooring, however, is more than just skin deep. It is made from wood products and plastics that are compressed and bonded under high pressure to form an incredibly hard plank with an aluminum-oxide finish that is almost “as hard as diamonds”. “It is nearly impossible to stain, it doesn’t fade, never needs waxing or polishing and will probably never wear through,” says Marc Henderson, CEO of Hardwoodbrokers.com.

Raise your home value simply by investing in flooring
10.08.06 (10:31 pm)   [edit]

Want to significantly increase your home's asking price? Invest in new flooring!

Investing $4000 - $5000 in new flooring can increase the value of your home by an average of $10,000, doubling the home owner's return on investment, reports John Shipman in his Time Magazine article "10 Ways to Raise the Value of your Home". This is a good tip for those planning to put their homes on the market.

According to experts, the key to attracting buyers and getting the most value from your home sale is to follow the theory of "What buyers can see vs. what they can't see." In other words, home sellers should make improvements starting from what buyers can see right away (such as flooring, landscaping, new paint) to what buyers can't see (plumbing, electrical upgrades). That is, before investing in a new plumbing system for the house, change the floors. Most buyers won't even ask how good the plumbing is if they notice a huge stain on the carpeting first. That first impression, the exterior, is what gets buyers into the door and interested.

FloorMall.com, your one stop flooring shop company knows the difference a strong attractive floor can make to a resale value. With multiple flooring centers throughout America, the company employees top flooring consultants to help home owners choose the best flooring option for their lifestyle and investment goals.

The most popular flooring people use to create an air of elegance is hardwood flooring. Installed and treated properly, hardwood floors give the home an image of refined age and history. Laminate flooring, area rugs, tile and bamboo floors are also in demand because it gives the home a crisp, clean, and modern look.

Over the past three years, the real estate market has experienced tremendous growth giving buyers many options to choose from. It is therefore necessary for sellers who want to attract potential buyers and make a profitable sale, to improve the homes they are selling. Updating the flooring in your home is a simple and effective way of accomplishing that big sale.

Become the Real Spy with Spy Review
10.08.06 (9:08 pm)   [edit]

If you think the techno-spying in the latest thriller "Enemy of the State" is scary, here it is right in U.K.

Spyreview.co.uk has been selling snooping aids since 2000, including custom-designed earrings containing recorders, bustiers with video cameras hidden inside and more, at prices that can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

"We build stuff into cell phones, pagers, wall plates--you name it," store owner Dan earner said.

Although U.K law bans unauthorized third-party wiretaps, that doesn't prevent people from purchasing such devices and using them surreptitiously.

"But we don't want to be a party to selling equipment to people who will use it illegally," Dan said. And some items, like wireless recorders, for example, can be sold only to law enforcement officials.

Spyreview.co.uk claims it is the buyer's responsibility to obey laws that govern possession of items sold, but common sense also prevails.

"One time we had some guys come in who wanted to buy Covert Keylogging Keyboard," Dan said. "We suspected they were gang members, so we didn't deal with them."

Spyreview.co.uk is owned and operated by Jago Network, a licensed private investigation agency. Spyreview.co.uk sets up sting operations for law enforcement officials, provides executive and celebrity protection services and operates a private investigator training academy.

More than 2,100 items are for sale in Spyreview.co.uk online catalog, from on how to Spoof SMS eBook to Security Related Books at Spy Review Spy Gear Shop. There are also spy news bites, and links to other spy-related sites such as the CIA and the FBI.

Or visit Spyreview.co.uk. But buyer beware, someone could be spying on you too.

Elegantly styled, the Sony Vaio VGN-FE770G notebook PC is more than just a pretty face. It offers cutting-edge processing power from Intel's new Core 2 Duo line for outstanding multi-tasking performance as well as a tri-mode wireless LAN, enabling you to connect to a full assortment of 802.11a/b/g networks. A 5400 rpm Serial ATA hard drive and advanced DDR2 memory enable high-speed computing, resulting in sizzling performance for work and multimedia activities. It also features a bright widescreen 15.4-inch XBRITE-ECO LCD screen that offers excellent color purity even in the brightest daylight. And communicate with pals all around with world via VoIP calling and video conferencing using the built-in microphone and camera (with zoom function).

It's powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predcessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core T5600 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.83 GHz speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache.

With Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you can view your movies and photos with stunning clarity and brilliant, true-to-life color. It also features a 120 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), multi-format, dual-layer DVD burner, Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 950 card with 128 MB of shared video RAM, memory card reader, ExpressCard/34 slot, and a wide selection of preloaded Sony multimedia software titles. This is Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Large and in charge, the 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 processor has a 1.83 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, 533 MHz, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is a good start out of the box, but you'll want to maximize the 2 GB capacity of this machine to make your multimedia hum along.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard (2.5mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 15.4-inch WXGA LCD offers Sony's XBRITE-ECO display technology and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The widescreen display gives increases the width of the notebook's display while giving the computer the form factor of a smaller computer, so it takes up less space on your desk or in your briefcase. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also has an integrated audio card with Microsoft Windows sound system compatibility.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The FE770G features an integrated PRO/Wireless 3915ABG wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard/34 card slot (in addition to a traditional PCMCIA card slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connection options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II/Type I card)
  • 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
  • 1 VGA monitor out
  • 1 S-Video out

The easy-to-use Compaq Presario SR1850NX Media Center PC is the complete home PC system that delivers more entertainment choices, and brings them together in one place with easy access from anywhere in the room. With the SR1850NX you can watch, record, and pause live TV programming as well as schedule the PC to record upcoming episodes or entire series. And you can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. This affordable, family-oriented desktop offers room to grow--including available PCI and expansion slots and a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. This desktop comes with a large 250 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM, 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor, Lightscribe dual-layer/multi-format DVD drive, secondary DVD-ROM drive, a memory card reader that's compatible with a wide range of formats, and Windows XP Media Center edition.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 250 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is above-average in size compared to other media-centric desktop PCs. It provides a good size for a wide range of software applications and a generously sized digital audio library as well as room enough for editing digital home video.
  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 3700+ processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MT/s (mega transfers per second) and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.) It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Cool'n'Quiet Technology that conserves power while also keeping the PC nicely quiet.
  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC3200) is a very good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. This desktop has a very good 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 1 GB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the SR1850NX's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds. It also comes with a second DVD-ROM optical drive, with 16x read speed.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs. Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200 IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It delivers up to 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone, line-in, and headphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1850NX has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), two external 3.5-inch bays (one available), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connectors:

A Home Security Camera System Is Becoming More Popular In Homes
10.06.06 (4:11 am)   [edit]

Do You Trust Your Babysitter? Ok, so it's not so much about trust as it is assurance. Of course you trust your babysitter to take care of your child the way that you would. You honestly believe that your babysitter keeps a cool temper with your child, don't you? So it's not that you don't trust her, right?

However, a little assurance would be extremely comforting during those minutes of doubt. More parents than ever are buying and installing "Nanny Cams" or another type of home security camera system. The trend seems to be catching on with many parents around the US. It's a little assurance that's becoming more affordable than ever.

"We just don't want to take any chances. We want to know if our babysitter invites anyone into our home while we're gone," says Jenny Collin, mother of 2. "We make the babysitter aware of the camera and she seems ok with it."

A complete security camera system can usually be purchased for under $100 for the camera, the remote control, and the special PC software that allows you to watch over your child and the babysitter from work or anywhere that you can get an Internet connection. That's down from over $600 just a few years ago. Most also come with a recording system that allows you to record the video on your computer hard drive or to a VCR/DVR.

Again, most parents say it's not about not trusting your nanny, you just want to be sure that your baby is in the best hands at all times. It's all part of having a home security plan.

Tech Gadgets Banned in the USA
10.06.06 (12:36 am)   [edit]

The bottom line: If you want the newest, coolest show-stopping gadgets, you can click your way to the handful of online stores that will satisfy your lust for hard-to-get tech, right from the comfort of your home.

There's no doubt about it: foreign technology can whet your appetite. Super-lightweight laptops from Japan, feature-packed smartphones from Europe, and shiny, gotta-get-it devices designed in India, South Korea, and Taiwan are but a few of the items that currently reside on tech's cutting edge. But chances are you will never see those gadgets on store shelves here in the U.S.

A trip to the typical U.S. electronics store suggests many Americans would gladly shell out some extra cash for high-end lightweight products. Smaller, lighter, and more-expensive laptops are occupying an ever-increasing amount of shelf space. Even if a larger percentage of Japanese and European consumers reach for higher-end products than their U.S. counterparts, a small percentage of Americans could still spell big sales.

Why, then, do some innovative products never make it to our shores?

The Corporate Quarantine

Many manufacturers prefer to introduce new electronics in their own countries, to see what problems may arise before exporting the goods. There is a strong interest in catching and repairing previously unknown design defects before hitting the U.S. mass market, where the cost of a product recall could be disastrous.

Companies must also gauge consumer reaction locally before exporting. Manufacturers realize that despite extensive consumer testing, it is important to float a limited quantity of a product and see how well consumers react to it before opening the floodgates-only to find less demand than anticipated.

Some products are at a performance disadvantage in the U.S., like cutting-edge smartphones that do not mesh well with the current state of American telecom services, and videophones that operate much better in countries that have higher-speed wireless networks. The faster the network, the smoother the video will appear. In general, Japanese and Korean telecommunications companies have been quicker to provide faster connections than those offered in the U.S., so consumers in those countries are presented with more-advanced phones and more-advanced services.

Plus, according to a major player in this game, the U.S. tech market tends to take its cue from big business, not John Q. Public.

"In Japan, where a majority of the cutting-edge innovation occurs, they're driven by consumer demand. In the U.S., we're mainly driven by business needs. That's why you see more of an emphasis on cheap laptops than on lightweight machines," says Douglas Krone, chief executive of Dynamism.com, an online site that sells technology not found on the shelves of U.S. retail stores.

Smaller, Faster, Better?

In addition to corporate strategies driven by the bottom line, there are cultural preferences to consider.

Japanese consumers do not flinch at spending the equivalent of $3,000 or more on a laptop as long as it has the most up-to-date technology and weighs less than 2 pounds, Krone says. Consumers in Japan, and many in Europe, will spend more to enjoy the fruits of innovation rather than use a laptop or gadget that is just "good enough" for their purposes.

American consumers, on the other hand, are more interested in lower prices than lighter weights, which makes top-of-the-line electronics a difficult sell in this country, Krone says.

Yuni Sucippo, vice president of I-Cube, another Web site offering products from beyond U.S. borders, agrees. "Americans, in general, tend to like big, powerful notebooks," she says. "They want everything in there, as much storage Relevant Products/Services from HP as they can get, as fast as it can go, as big as possible. But they end up carrying around 10 pounds of computer."

Shoppers on I-Cube value lighter notebooks that may not offer as much performance or capacity as those preferred by the typical American consumer, but instead boast ultra portability. To be sold on the site as a light notebook, a computer must weigh less than 4 pounds, and most units meeting that requirement are not available in the United States.

The same holds true at Dynamism.com. For example, the lightest PC on the global market, the 1.2-pound Sony Vaio U50, is not sold in America. The U50 is smaller than a portable DVD player and has an external foldable keyboard. Although this laptop might appeal to people who crave the ultimate in mobility Relevant Products/Services from Sprint, most U.S. corporate users would pass on it, Krone says.

Too Much To Chew

Some companies in Europe and Japan do not enter the U.S. market because their profit margins are razor-thin. Even U.S. companies like IBM and Hewlett-Packard have stepped away from certain kinds of equipment in favor of technology that produces more revenue. Foreign companies that decide to sell their most-innovative products to Americans would have to set up extensive customer-service operations, which could be cost-prohibitive given the massive size of the U.S. market. Dynamism.com tries to fill this gap by providing customer service and tech support for all the equipment it sells, acting as a go-between for consumers and companies like Sony, Nuvo, Xacti, and Fuji.

Even if sufficient demand for these products emerges, there are legal issues to consider. For example, patent law in Japan and Europe is different than in the U.S. Exporting a wealth of technology and then trying to protect valuable patents might be more trouble than many companies are willing to undertake-especially smaller manufacturers that might not yet have a corporate presence in America.

"Sometimes, it just doesn't make sense for a company to spend the time and effort to get patents here and do the enforcement necessary just to sell here," says Steve Kelber, an attorney at the law firm of Merchant & Gould.

That could change with the Patent Reform Act of 2005, which would make the U.S. law so similar to that in other countries that it would be much easier for companies to protect their rights. The bill was introduced in June of last year by Rep. Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) and is still awaiting passage.

On the Horizon

Even if patent reform takes hold in the U.S., shoppers seeking niche items will likely continue to visit sites like Dynamism.com and I-Cube.

Some people may want the hard-to-find gadgets because no one else has them-kind of the geek equivalent of haute couture. But, Sucippo says, most customers are simply frustrated by the lack of truly portable options at their local computer retailers. I-Cube attracts tech aficionados who buy items as soon as they become available, she says, even if they have recently purchased a similar product on the site.

"The ones who buy like this are a smaller group, but they're growing," she says. "With the amount of people who travel and work now, there's more appreciation for lighter, more-portable notebooks."

I-Cube also features accessories, PDAs, and Tablet PCs. Gadget lovers who are disappointed that Sony stopped selling Clie handhelds in the U.S. need only surf over to I-Cube, which buys the PDAs directly from Japan and then converts most of the operating system into English. One downside: About 40 percent of the OS is still in Japanese.

Used in Japan, New to You

Kurns & Patrick also specializes in ultralight technology from Japan. One aspect of the site that sets it apart is its used section, which gives cash-strapped tech lovers the chance to buy a "previously loved" computer or gadget that is still in decent condition. Every used item comes with a three-month warranty.

In general, however, the question of a warranty is a potential deal-breaker for Kurns & Patrick and other imported-technology sites. If someone buys an item from Best Buy, it can be taken to the store for service or sent back to the manufacturer directly. But computers purchased on a site such as Kurns & Patrick come with a one-year Japanese domestic warranty, which means it must be returned to Japan-or to Kurns & Patrick-for repair.

The good news, according to the company, is that some manufacturers, like Panasonic and Sharp, honor their warranties globally. Others, like Toshiba, do not.

Even if U.S. buyers take it on faith that the item works perfectly, they should consider another potential drawback: Some of the machines have Japanese keyboards, which are very close in layout to English-language keyboards, but aren't a spot-on match. Kurns & Patrick offers English stickers for the keyboards on some models.

In general, though, such quirks are unlikely to put off folks who treasure a 2-pound notebook or a super-slim DVD drive.

Stock Answers

Despite the possible sales to be gained from these niche customers, large retailers in the U.S. get their marching orders not only from consumers, but also from shareholders. That's where the economics of mediocrity come into play.

High-end products command a high-end price. Most shoppers tend to make middle-of-the-road selections at middle-of-the-road prices. Catering to that mentality will produce the kind of returns stockholders demand. It's an economic reality that further diminishes the chances certain top-of-the-line tech goodies will reach U.S. shores anytime soon.

The bottom line: If you want the newest, coolest show-stopping gadgets, you can click your way to the handful of online stores that will satisfy your lust for hard-to-get tech, right from the comfort of your home.

But for the true beyond-borders electronics experience, you'll need to pony up for a plane ticket to Tokyo. And if you bring your notebook computer, just make sure you have a sturdy shoulder strap.

"People understand the need for mobility the second they have to carry a heavy laptop through an airport," says Sucippo. "After that, they come to us."

Fujitsu's Concept Tablet PCs
10.04.06 (7:48 am)   [edit]

Think flat. Think thin. Think about a PC roughly the size and shape of a thick magazine. Think about scribbling notes on it, editing documents on it, sending emails or wirelessly shared files on it—all with the stroke of a pen. It's an interesting thought, isn't it? A PC you can tuck under your arm, slip discreetly onto a conference table, or hold like a clipboard as you walk through a warehouse, a field or a corporate corridor.

Shown off at CEATEC, these two Concept Tablet PCs look like something even sexier than MacBooks and MacBook Pros. First there's the Turn Tablet PC, which is a large PC with a magnetic screen and a stylus that runs Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. It includes a standard keyboard and touch-pad, with a slot-loading DVD drive on the front. The second is a smaller UMPC-like device with the swiveling screen and a PSP/PS3-like UI. We're not exactly sure what the swiveling screen is for, but it sure does look cool. Plan on seeing these in your local Circuit City around the year two thousand and never.

Latest MP3 players come equipped with songs
10.02.06 (6:33 pm)   [edit]

SAN FRANCISCO - Customers picking up the latest MP3 players this fall are getting much more than just a device. Increasingly, they're getting free music as well.

To set themselves apart from the pack, manufacturers are preloading content into their players to increase sales -- and the music industry is only too happy to oblige.

The Zune from Microsoft, expected this fall, will contain up to 30 free tracks donated from major and independent label partners.

While the economics of the deal vary a bit from one manufacturer to another, they're all basically quid pro quo arrangements in which labels provide the free tracks and reap the promotional rewards in distribution and marketing support.

"It's a direct promotional situation" for labels, Zune head of artist development Richard Winn said. "When you can quantify the real estate to them, then they get interested."

Microsoft is still not discussing the number of Zunes it will ship, but it is expected to be in the millions. The company also will launch a marketing campaign equal to that of its Xbox 360 launch, estimated at more than $300 million. Winn says that much of the advertising and promotional materials will contain images and music of the artists whose tracks can be heard on the Zune.

SanDisk is taking the concept even further in its new relationship with Rhapsody. The manufacturer will introduce a line of Sansa digital media players dubbed the Sansa Rhapsody. More than 32 hours of music will be preloaded into the device, most of it major-label fare. SanDisk, a supplier of flash data storage products, holds the No. 2 position behind the iPod with 18 percent of the flash-based player market.

This initiative is a bit different in that the music is subscription-based, meaning that users have to subscribe to Rhapsody and sync their devices, or the preloaded music will stop playing after 30 days.

NO SHARING

Label sources say they see great promotional benefit for giving away music on these devices, as long as it's protected in a secure digital rights management system that prohibits sharing that song for free.

"This represents a great opportunity for us," said Astralwerks general manager Errol Kolosine, whose company is contributing music from its artist Hot Chip to Zune. "The music industry has been giving away music samplers for decades. It's like a pusher -- we give you the first hit for free."

Interestingly, the concept of preloading came not out of a desire to promote music, but rather a more tactical need.

In March, SanDisk (one of the pioneers of the preloading strategy) began distributing the Sansa e200 with about 20 songs embedded. According to Eric Bone, director of product marketing and audio/video for SanDisk, the idea initially came at the request of consumer electronic retail chains seeking a better try-before-you-buy experience. Without content, there is little opportunity to compare user interfaces, say, or screen resolution. "As they put the device out on the shelf displays, if there's no content on it, it's worthless," Bone said.

With 742 Best Buy stores and 632 Circuit City stores nationwide, the music industry saw the advantage of exploiting this need to get its music in front of more eyes and ears. Labels have focused on contributing music by artists who have a new album or tour coinciding with the device's release date.

And manufacturers are planning to increase their retail presence as well. Zune plans to establish a significant in-store experience that includes listening stations and large displays that incorporate the images and music of the embedded artists.

The biggest wild card, of course, is whether anyone purchasing these devices will actually listen to the preloaded music and subsequently buy more of it. But since the concept is relatively new, there's no data yet that suggests whether preloading music has any affect one way or the other.

Could Apple Become Games Console King?
10.02.06 (4:54 am)   [edit]
For all the hype about iTV, here's another potential application: iGames. Could Steve Jobs and co really have their eye on the console market?

As summer turns to fall and the phosphor-lit leaves of the current stand of next-gen consoles begin to turn decidedly ‘This Gen,’ we already know that the scramble by Microsoft and Sony to put a digital Trojan horse into every living room in America has evolved into the greatest business story that never happened.

Microsoft had to redouble efforts to cover a weak 360 launch that saw the debut of the sweetest-$400-casual-game -platform-of-all-time rather than the Sony-killing muscle machine for which the geeks in Redmond had been bucking. And while PS3 delays, some deft management, and an impressive roster of upcoming releases looks to put the big green X back on track, the Microsoft army is still massing its troops.

For its part, Sony has clearly given up altogether on the idea of the PS3 as Trojan horse. Instead, it’s switched strats and gone into Blu-ray battering-ram mode. In both cases, these companies have shrieked so loudly and so long about their plans to capture the Holy Grail of Digital Convergence that pretty soon people are going to start lobbing cattle at them.

Maybe, then, Nintendo really got it right when it started dressing up the DS like an iPod.

Sensitive region

Maybe the advent of iGames, the introduction of iTV, and the application for a patent covering handhelds with more than one touch-sensitive region are really the sawing sounds of building a new... Trojan... Apple.

According to Disney chief Bob Iger, the iTV wireless streaming media device will have a hard drive. He recently said "It's a small box about the size of a novel, and not War and Peace, by the way. It plugs into the television like any other peripheral would, like a DVD device. It's wireless. It detects the presence of computers in your home; in a very simple way you designate the computer you want to feed it and it wirelessly feeds whatever you downloaded on iTunes which include videos, TV, music videos, movies or your entire iTunes music library to your television set."

A plausible argument by Roughly Drafted’s Daniel Eran has the iTV being held just long enough for Apple to introduce 802.11n, which would allow 200 Mbit connections to an access point, nearly 10 times the a/g variety and more than enough to stream DVD-quality content wirelessly from a Mac (and possibly a PC). That would help explain the inclusion of an HDMI connection on Apple’s new device. As Eran points out, you don’t need an HDMI connection if you are simply streaming downloadable 640X480 content.

Some have speculated that the iTV may also be destined to get one of Intel’s Conroe-L processors, which it would need to process the HD content Apple eventually wants to sell over iTunes. Further, according to some, it’s very possible video card drivers could be written so that graphic output data could be sent to a network port instead of the monitor connected to the card. That opens the possibility of using iTV and a wireless controller to remotely play Mac/PC games (*cough* WoW *cough*) in your living room.

Convenient then, that on September 7, 2006, Apple filed a patent application for a handheld electronic device with “multiple touch-sensitive devices.”  Sure, the primary application of the patent is likely to layer a touch screen over the iPod’s display, but applications that involve improving gaming control with Apple products is not far-fetched.

All of this basically means that Apple could be on the verge of launching a slimmed down, single-core Mac Mini capable of streaming interactive content from a host computer and capable of storing and playing casual games locally.

Several developers have bemoaned the current, closed nature of iPod gaming. Persuasive Games’ Ian Bogost has written that “for now the iPod is as closed a development platform as they come. Which means that the iTunes Game Store is a walled garden with the tallest of slick, stone walls.”

This is likely intentional, despite the fact that many longtime Mac game developers are fuming over being locked out of the garden, even after years of faithful support.

It’s worth remembering, however, that Steve Jobs was a former employee of Nolan Bushnell. We all know how failing to protect the platform stung Atari. And it was Jobs who had a hand in making the classic, Breakout, so he’s certainly not devoid of game cred.

It would be truly ironic if a Trojan Apple rolled out of Cupertino. Instead of using games to gain convergence, Jobs and company may just use music and video to wrap up games into a neat set-top bundle. And the cultural ubiquity of the iPod brand certainly wouldn’t hurt iTV’s aspirations to breach our living room walls.

After all, it was an apple that started Homer’s great war.

Samsung's Blu-ray player
10.02.06 (3:22 am)   [edit]

Superb video and audio quality at a steep price...that's my immediate take on the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player. Of course, a mix of factors is likely to drive the price down in the not too distant future.

The chief one, in my view, is the ongoing format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD and the need for the leading players (Samsung for Blu-ray and Toshiba for HD-DVD) to prove their mettle very early in the game.

This review is not a comparative evaluation of the two formats, nor does it make any statement of which one will be the likely successor to the DVD player. The jury is still out on that one.

The focus here is on the Samsung BD-P1000, the first Blu-Ray set top player to hit the market. The player showcases some of the strengths of Blu-Ray technology, as well as areas where it needs to develop.

To really appreciate the features of the BD-P1000 -- and these are many -- you need a significant disposable income. You would need to hook up the player, which retails for $1,165 (around £785), to a large-screen, high-resolution display.

In my tests I married the BD-P1000 player to both the Samsung LN-S4051D 40-inch Wide HDTV that supports 1080i resolution, as well as the Samsung HLS6187W TV with support for 1080p. In both cases I used the HDMI cable to connect the player and TVs.

For comparison purposes, I also hooked up the BD-P1000 to my Sony DVD player, using the component ports on both devices. (The BD-P1000 also includes S-Video and composite outputs).

Great video, lengthy load time

Samsung included three Blu-Ray discs in the review unit they sent me.

I viewed these first on the Samsung LN-S4041D HDTV and then on the Samsung HLS6187W TV. In both cases, the sound and visual quality were compelling, but it was the HLS6287W -- with its 1080p (1080 lines) high-definition display -- that offered the best results.

Watching Underworld Evolution (starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman) on this 61-inch HLS6187W DLP display was an audio-visual bonanza (after I got the disc to load, which incidentally took a good 35 seconds).

The visual style of Underworld Evolution - a Sony Pictures flick - is consciously bleak and includes inky greys, deep blues and purples and silvers. On the HLS6187W they displayed with pristine clarity, sans noise or any noticeable inconsistency. XXX, the other Sony Pictures title included with the box, thankfully had a broader palette of colors most of which displayed vividly.

To get optimal picture quality from the Blu-Ray discs, you need to use either the HDMI or component outputs on the BD-P1000 and set the signal format to either 1080i or 1080p. The BD-P1000 player obtains the picture resolution from the TV, so if hooked to a TV that doesn't support 1080p, that option will be disabled in the menu.

The BD-1000 player did a great job of upconverting regular DVDs. However, the video quality -- even with the component output -- was not a patch on what I obtained from a Blu-ray disc viewed using the HDMI signal.

The interactive pop up menu is a wonderful feature of Blu-Ray technology and the Samsung BD-P1000. It enables you to pull up the disc menu, without stopping playback. The menu overlays the movie, which you can continue to watch while browsing through the scenes, the cast and other features.

Awesome audio

Audio quality provided by the BD-P1000 can be far richer, and noticeably more differentiated that anything you get from DVD.

The BD-P1000 supports dolby digital plus (DD+) and DTS HD -- high quality multichannel audio formats. According to the Samsung Blu-Ray demo disc, these technologies utilize an audio bit rate up to 10 times higher than DVD.

Here too, however, a few variables determine what you actually experience.

Fabulous audio can be obtained connecting your Blu-Ray player to an HDMI supported amplifier. If you have the right audio gear, the uncompressed linear PCM soundtrack from the Sony Blu-Ray discs can be transferred directly from the disc to the audio system with no conversion.

One of the Sony Blu-ray Discs I tested (Underworld Evolution) carried an uncompressed linear PCM soundtrack. This can be transmitted right from the disc into the audio system with no conversion if you have the right gear. The BD-P1000 includes both optical and coaxial digital outputs and a set of 5.1-channel analog audio outputs. The HDMI output can also transmit digital audio.

MP3 files and pictures

A really cool feature of the BD-P1000 is the two card readers on the front panel that enable it to display digital pictures and play mp3 files from 10 different types of flash media.

When testing this capability, though, I had mixed experiences. I slid a multimedia expansion card that contained both music and pictures into the memory card slot in the BD-P1000.

The mp3 files played exceptionally well -- crystal clear, highly differentiated sounds -- and navigation from one song to another was quick and easy using the remote and the Music List display on the screen.

With the photos though it was a less satisfying experience. It took endless seconds for the first picture to load, with an annoying hour glass popping up until the first picture appeared on the screen. While the picture "play" capability is cool, navigating from one picture to the next again takes at least 10 seconds -- and you have the same hour glass to keep you company while you wait!

The quality of the images, however, was great. Pictures of my Western Canada vacation appeared vivid and surprisingly detailed. Of course much of the credit for this would go to the display capabilities of the Samsung HLS6187W TV.

Final word

To sum up, the BD-P1000 player does a good job of showcasing Blu-Ray technology.

Its main strengths include: exceptional video and audio quality (when hooked up with the right display and audio gear); its ability to upconvert DVDs and CDs, unique interactive features, and truly wide-ranging multimedia capabilities. The design of the player is also compelling -- a glossy black case with an angled silver strip at the bottom -- which on the left side encases the memory card slots.

Negative features include the inordinately long time it takes to load discs and navigate between pictures, and at times, the erratic behavior of the player (such as its failure, a couple of times, to pick up the pictures from my memory card).

Samsung will be releasing a firmware update that may fix some of these problems...I hope. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the new firmware will be released in mid-October (October 15, his e-mail said). It will be available for download from the Samsung site, or can be requested from a Samsung service centre.

Bottomline: the Blu-Ray player is a good buy if you have a significant disposable income.

If not, you may want to wait until Samsung -- or it's competitors -- release the next generation of improved, and cheaper, Blu-Ray machines.

Voodoo Pc Review
10.02.06 (2:58 am)   [edit]

Imagine a CPU heat sink on steroids, on wheels, hollowed out and used as a system case, then packed with some of the best-performing hardware around. That's essentially the system that Voodoo has put together in its $5,000-plus Eden. Instead of the cooling fans you are used to seeing (and hearing) inside a PC case, Voodoo has taken a different route in keeping the Eden's thermals under control by using copper pipes to dissipate the heat. Though it's somewhat flawed, hard-core gamers willing to spare no expense or power users with noise-level issues and a yen for the dramatic will find that this unique--albeit large--PC mostly gets the job done. Just don't plan on doing any major upgrades yourself because the complex internal workings are not user-friendly.

Design of Voodoo Eden
It's big and bad, but at least it's on wheels.

The Voodoo Eden is built around an innovative idea: instead of using fans to dissipate internal heat, why not transform the entire PC case into a giant heat sink? Based on the simple principle of convection, the Eden routes heat from the processor and graphics card to the matte-black aluminum case by using a snaking array of 6mm copper pipes. The only moving parts are the optical and hard drives, so this is an extremely quiet system (around 20db, according to Voodoo, or roughly equivalent to the rustling of leaves). If you are looking for a quiet system for living-room use, however, this isn't the system for you because of its size and weight. At 50 pounds and measuring 25 by 11.3 by 15.3 inches (H, W, D), we don't know of many rooms that the Eden could call home without becoming the centerpiece.

Heat-dispensing fins give the side panels a grill-like appearance, and the front and back panels work as latched doors. Swirling plastic notches line the top and the bottom of each door frame, which provide easy and necessary cable routing--the six USB 2.0 ports (two front, four back), two rear-side FireWire jacks, and all other inputs and outputs are enclosed when the doors are shut. Four lockable wheels and two dorsal handles help you transport this beast, and all external parts can be unscrewed, freeing the screw holes for stacking multiple Eden systems on top of each other. Though most users would find little need for this, Voodoo imagines a graphics-rendering farm might, especially one where noise concerns or showing off a dramatic image might be issues.

The cables route nicely out of the way. We'd appreciate this feature even on a standard chassis. A glimpse of how difficult it is to perform an upgrade.

We certainly appreciate its uniqueness, but the Eden's design presents some painful stumbling blocks. Upgrading the system yourself is a serious headache. Easy access is available only through the hinged front and rear doors, and the convection pipes are essentially static. You can add PCI cards--two of the five slots are vacant--and if you're nimble enough, you can also add more RAM in the one free slot. Voodoo advises that you use its lifetime upgrade-assistance program for most upgrades beyond the PCI card and memory expansion. You should be able to swap out hard drives by unscrewing the metal plates to which they are attached, but the hard drive screws on our unit held so fast that we nearly stripped them.

Features of Voodoo Eden
Since case design makes future swapping of core components nigh impossible to do yourself, it's a good thing Voodoo makes some of the highest-quality consumer-level hardware on the market available when configuring the Eden through its online configurator. Our almost-silent brute arrived with a 2.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 1GB of Corsair DDR 400MHz memory, a muscle-bound ATI Radeon 9800 XT with both DVI and VGA outputs, and two Hitachi 7,200rpm 120GB serial ATA RAID hard drives (striped, mirrored, or no RAID at all, it's your choice). Rounding out the tower are two Plextor drives: a 52X CD-RW drive and an 8X multiformat DVD-recordable drive.

Though it's hard to tell from here, those optical drives are pretty much there to stay. Why mess around if you're going to pay more than $5,000?

Voodoo's configurator is intentionally a bit bare when it comes to core components, in keeping with its policy of including only tested high-end hardware. The Asus K8V-D motherboard is the only option for an Athlon-based Eden, and you have but three AMD processors from which to choose. Voodoo will install only two Hitachi hard drives in an attempt to keep system volume to a minimum (it will accommodate requests for more drives); and your graphics card choices are limited to either the ATI Radeon 9600 XT or the 9800 XT.

Voodoo bundled a 17-inch Iiyama E431SB flat-panel display with our Eden test system, which demonstrated great image quality with both games and DVD movies. A sound-input jack allows you to pipe audio through to the integrated monitor speakers, but with the superlative Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS card powering your audio, you'd be better served bypassing the tinny monitor speakers and taking advantage of the bundled Creative GigaWorks S750 7.1-channel speakers. You can configure other audio output options on Voodoo's Web site, including a $45 set of Zalman headphones.

Also included is one of Voodoo's welcome trademarks, a large leather-bound binder that houses a slew of driver and software CDs, as well as a signed ownership certificate and a summation of system program versions and testing scores. Inside you'll find two games (Rainbow Six 3 and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness), Roxio's Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.0, a photo-editing program, and several other software demo CDs. The excellent Logitech Cordless MX Duo keyboard and optical, rechargeable mouse were included with our Eden test system as well.

Performance of Voodoo Eden
Application performance
The Voodoo Eden's application performance was quite good considering its AMD Athlon 64 3400+ CPU. While this 64-bit processor is certainly no slouch (even when running our 32-bit benchmarks), its 335 BAPCo SysMark 2002 score bested the Falcon Northwest Mach V's with its faster-rated Athlon 64 FX-51. We were especially impressed with the Internet content-creation score of 459. Most AMD-based systems score much lower on that test than Intel-based systems do, and the 459 is one of the highest scores we've seen in systems using chips from either manufacturer. We would have liked to see slightly higher office-productivity scores, but the 244 is still within expected parameters. Unequivocally, the Voodoo Eden is a very high-performing system that scored even better than we expected.

To measure application performance, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's SysMark 2002, an industry-standard benchmark. Using off-the-shelf applications, SysMark measures a desktop's performance using office-productivity applications (such as Microsoft Office and McAfee VirusScan) and Internet-content-creation applications (such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver).

3D graphics and gaming performance
The Voodoo Eden's 222 frames per second (fps) score on our Unreal Tournament 2003 1,024x768 test is about what we expected and about equal to results from other systems that use an ATI Radeon 9800XT graphics card. More impressive is its 67.7fps score on our more demanding Unreal test at a resolution of 1,600x1,200 with both 4X antialiasing and 8X anisotropic filtering. These settings are nearly as high as you can crank that game, and the Eden knocked it out of the park. Not only will you be able to play any game you choose with this powerful system, you should be able to play most games with graphics detail and resolution settings pumped up as far as they will go while still maintaining playable frame rates.

To measure 3D gaming performance, CNET Labs uses Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 2003, widely used as an industry-standard benchmark. We use Unreal to measure a desktop's performance with the DirectX 8.0 (DX8) interface at a 32-bit color depth at a resolution of 1,024x768. For higher-end systems that support higher resolutions, we run an additional test at 1,600x1,200. Antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are disabled during our 1,024x768 tests and are set to 4X and 8X respectively during our 1,600x1,200 tests. At this color depth and these resolutions, Unreal is an excellent way to compare the performance of low-end to high-end graphics subsystems. We report the results of Unreal's Flyby-Antalus test in frames per second (fps).

Service and support of Voodoo Eden
Voodoo is one of the best in the business in the support field. Included with the Eden is its Select Upgrade Assurance program, which lasts for the life of the system and allows you to upgrade components at cost plus 10 percent with a labor fee, ideal for the Eden, since upgrading is more complicated than with standard systems. Default for the system is a one-year warranty that includes parts, labor, and two-way shipping, and it is expandable to three-year coverage for an additional $300 or more.

Voodoo tells us that phone support will soon be 24/7, but as of this writing, it is available only from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekdays and from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Saturdays. The phone agreement technically lasts only for the life of the warranty, but Voodoo is known to continue phone support for customers who've purchased systems as far back as 1990. The Voodoo binder is packed with manufacturer manuals and driver CDs for all the major components, not to mention three system recovery CDs, though sadly, no overall system manual. Online support consists of live support chat, links to driver downloads, manufacturer Web sites, and even links to the more popular computer hobbyist sites.
